Serial Device not starting WinNT 4.0

By 69pontiac ·
I just installed some VPN software on a Toshiba Tecra 8000 with NT. They are now getting service not started errors due to the fact that Serial Device is not started. Apparently, this has never started as long as they've had the machine but it has gone unnoticed until this software required it be started. I tried to start it manually in control panel devices and got this error. "could not start the serial service on 'computer name'. Error 1118: no serial device was succesfully initialized." The serial driver will unload. I tried upgrading to SP6 as an IBM bulletin suggested with GINA errors. I received a GINA error when initially installing but I'm not worried about that just yet. I couldn't find anything directly related to this error 1118 anywhere.

Serial Device not starting WinNT 4.0

Some possibilities
1)This could be a hardware failure - the port is bad.
2)The bios could be misconfigured

It appears not to be a hardware item. All of our laptops with this image are having the same problem. The com ports in the bios are configured properly. I have MS looking into it now. They had 7 instances of the problem and all of them were hardware related.

I just received another call from another user, I got screen shots of his event viewer errors and they are identical. He also just received the new software. One other thing, I checked other similar machines but they are not experiencing serial loadproblems. We use the same ghost image for all of them. The ghost appears to be ok. I don't think it's a hardware issue but could very well be a bios issue. I plan to check into it more today. I'm open to more suggestions if any.

This is a bit of a long shot, but try including /NOSERIALMICE in the boot.ini file. Dometimes the serial mouse detection can cause a non-mouse serial device to fail.

Just had another idea. Create an HQTOOL floppy disk and boot from that. You may get some useful diagnostics.

Instructions on how to create and use this floppy disk can be found in the HQTOOL directory on the Windows NT CD-ROM.
