Serial Link test tool

The testing of leased lines is the responsibility of your service provider, most guarantee 80+% up-time.

Most DSU and TSU's have built in testing tools which (if the far end is configured correctly to respond to a remote loop-back command) can loop up the far end equipment then send a 511 test pattern. Although this is not a high stress pattern, if you get errors the leased line is very bad.

For frame relay links you would have to contact your service provider to give you a loop to test to, ping the far end router, or pull a large file from the remote site to see how many errors/re-transmit requests are received.

If you have numerous circuits that you will be testing alot, (DS1 down to DS0B (9.6 analog), T-Berd 224 is a very handytest set although they are a bit pricey they are very easy to use and are pre-programmed with standard loop codes. Fire-bird also has a test set similar to the T-Berd.

Good Luck!
