Serial Port in Dos Session ThinkPad A22e

By wkeaton ·
I need to use some DOS based communications software on a Thinkpad A22e. However, I can not access the serial port while in a DOS session. The only work around I have found is to remove the serial port in the device list and click refresh to have Windows redetect the port but when I restart the port will not work in a DOS session again.

It's all depends on how your application attempts to detect the serial port.
If the port is correctly detected under windows os, (and you can use the port with a modem or any other device), the problem is in your aplication.
Under wind NT and win2k you won?t be able to access the hardware port directly, under those os, there's a layer between then, that isolate programing errors from the O.S.kernel
A better way to check this out, will be to boot the thinkpad with a DOS (version 5 or 6.22) diskette, and then try your application. If it works, the problem is windows, which not allows you to use the port.
Another issue that may be happening is irq mapping. While DOS only assumed irq 3 and irq 4 for com1 and com2 ports, windows may move orre-map this irq to 10, 11 or higher, isolating your com port from the ability of your apllication to work with this IRQ numbers.
This happens to me with a <DOS> APLICATION (ONLAN.EXE) when trying to use a PCMCIA (modem+lan) card. The modem works fine but with irq 11! and onlan.exe only sees irq 4 or irq 3!!

This is what I thought was happening. I have installed NT workstation on the thinkpad and it is working correctly now. Thanks.
