    by schlestak ·

I have tried adding com ports installing and removing remote access service tried changing memory addresses irq’s and can’t get it to work. I can’t even get a serial mouse to work. I have ibm 600x with nt 4.0 sp5 loaded. Any help would be great.

    Thank you,

have you checked if the serial ports are enabled in BIOS?

The first question would be, what are you installing the com port for? If you are installing a com port to handle a serial mouse, are there any other com ports already in use?

You may know this already but, generally serial port 1 is COM1 on IRQ4 at address 3F8h-3FFh and serial port 2 is COM2 on IRQ3 at address 2F8h-2FFh.

First make sure the cabling to the back side of the COM port and the motherboard connection are secure and oriented properly.

Enable COM1 thru the system bios and disable COM2. Check the addresses and IRQs as I listed. If necessary, remove any COM ports you may have added thru the ports applet and reboot. The system should pick up on the COM1 port automatically.

One other thing you may try is make sure you do not have a modem, sound card or network card attemting to use the same IRQs or addresses.

      Mike,
If you goto the IBM site and click through to the support page, you can get to a downloadable driver matrix for the Thinkpad 600X. This not only includes a driver package with everything you need to put NT on there, but there is also a Thinkpad configuration utility. Once that utility is installed, you can check (and change) the status of many hardware items integrated with the 600X. Ultimately, this just changes the BIOS settings, but it is a nice, easy way to make sure you get exactly what you want out of the configuration. There is definitely a feature to enable the serial port and check the settings for it. This was very useful when I was having a similar problem with the same machine (a serial port problem) while trying toinstall a Palm Pilot.

      Hope that helps!

NT will detect a mouse connected to the port if it has not been disabled in BIOS.
If it does not, check to see that the boot.ini is not using the “NoSerialMouse” option.
This option is usually enabled if there is a UPS connected on the com port.
