Serial ports

By darksight ·
Here is a question for my fellow computer junkies:

I have multiple dell machines kublai, mummies, sleestaks, etc. (code names). I am running into a problem on most of them. Serial port(s) not working. I have had dell replace all of my motherboards, reinstall windows from scratch, debug command shows prots are running, uninstalled ports reinstalled, but still no go. I know it is not a software issue, and i know its not the dell parts (i work for them, and i pretty much chose the mbs). How cani fix the computers so i can use the ports? And no i am not joining the usb or usb2 rush.

some apps and packages don't like auomatic assignment of Serial port resources,
check this setting on page 2 of your bios...

force the ports to be com1/com2 respectively or com3/com4....(depending upon resources used by pci devices).

one more thing, win9x has NEVER been good at sharing irq resources.

good luck....

Here is something that worked for me before in a Dell machine with WIN-NT.

1st. Disable the Plug and Play compatibility in the BIOS.

2nd. Force the ports with an assigned address, IRQs and Names (COM1, COM2, COM3, etc).

If that does not work, e-mail me (jairo@uta.edu) and we can work on it together...
