Server 4.0 Weekly Lock-up

By j.morris ·
Approx. every week, usually on Mon. a.m., the server locks up. After restarting, it will run fine. Have not been able to determine what is causing the lock up. Tried restarting server Friday evenings but that doesn't always prevent it from happening, it may not happen until later in the week when you can tell by the system slowing down. Checking the Task Manager, CPU usage, even after all users log out, is up to 90%. Something is running in the background and I have not been able to determine what it could be. Checked the Anti-virus, disabled PC Anywhere, backup scheduled for weeknights; I'm baffled.
Out network is small, one server with 12 workstations, running NT Workstation with MS Office. It has been suggested that I nuke the server and reinstall or even upgrade to 2000, but before I go through all that, has anyone had this problem and tried anything else that worked; or will a reinstall even fix this problem? Please help. Thanks.

Have you any other operations running on the server, Back Office or Exchange etc.

The two things I have had problems with like this have been Exchange 5.5 and the IS (store.exe) takes all available memory and soaks up the CPU ( there is a KB article about this) and a problem with Anti Virus (McAfee NetShield) soaking up CPU time and memory (on different servers). The latter turned out to be an issue with a swap file located on a partition on a data drive. Even though it was excluded from scanning, moving the swap file to a different drive eliminated the problem.

Also if you use the processes view of task manager you will be able to see which driver\service is hogging the CPU this should point you in the right direction

Hope this helps
Chris

I would try replacing the memory chips with new ones and see if that works (memory is really cheap now). If not I would go through each of the services one by one and find out what each one is doing and eliminate any un-needed services.

The first thing I would do is wait until the server's processor is starting to grind and load up task manager again. On the three tabs presented look on processes then click on the CPU column to sort results by CPU useage. The one that is using the most CPU will be at the top of the list(or close). Make a note of what its called and do a search on the net or post a question back already if you can't figure out what it is. At this point you at least know what causing the problem, then work out how to fix it.

Having similar problem as you are. Have traced back all possibility, nothing found.

In this office, there are two servers. One is PDC which worked fine and the problem box is the BDC. I tried to reinstall NT in the BDC, yet the problem keep recurring.

On the other hand, this office has severe problem with electricity, that it isn't so stable. One logical assumption, that the problem is arising from unstable electricity.

You might experience the same problem, as on Monday, every office on the block is turning on their electric dependent devices, and the power company couldn't catch up with this peak-impulse demand which could only be stabilized over a period of time.

Keep me posted okay ?
