    Server Manager/WINS

    Locked

    by jmiller ·

The BDC on the other end of my WAN is grayed out in the server manager on the PDC and on the BDC itself. At the same time, I’m having a WINS nightmare with a 75% failure rate on the WINS queries on the PDC and 90% on the BDC. I tried to replace the WINs DB, but that produced the same failure rates. I also uninstalled and reinstalled the service, and that didn’t seem to work.

    Thanks,

    Jimmy

      Hello Jimmy,
WINS has a very particular way to unistall and re-install. For example, did you delete the folder WINS once you unistalled it?
(By doing that next time you install it, the installation will halt, for it can find a folder inside WINS folder, you can just create it and leave empty. The installation will populate it).
The gray out situation likely have to do with WINS.
But, if you can do a boot on the machine. You know, NT has to be booted every 15 days or so. I have mine boot religiously every 15 days, it just performs better and don’t gi’me any fits.
Make sure that you reboot the machine, from the PDC, syncronize the domain and allow a little time for the machines to update.

      Good luck!

Hmmm… something very strange going on here but I guess you knew that already. The greyed-out icons in Server Manager is more likely a browsing problem indirectly related to WINS and there are some special problems with browsing across a WAN.

However, there is a TechNet article on rebuilding the WINS database (Q168712) that might provide some useful info. There is also a tool in the Resource Kit called browstat.exe that can show whether the browsing is working properly.

The other thingthat can cause problems across the WAN is if there is a firewall somewhere that is messing with the NetBios ports (137-139 for the most part).

Also, make sure the WINS servers themselves are pointed to themselves for both primary and secondary WINS servers and that push-pull replication is properly set up.

      regards!

As soon as you fix your wins problem your server grayed out problem will fix itself

Q205100 article about reinstalling or replacing Wins database,

Check event viewer for errors and take it from there

      Good luck
