server naming guide

By aluciani ·
Hi guy's:
I am just a bit curious about what type of server naming standards people in the industry use. I like naming servers planets but that may not be worthwhile. I am think of <campus site><what it does><number> what do you think or use.

Thanks for the help

I would try to keep the names short. It helps when typing the UNC for access. I also do not like to name servers with obvious names so they can be guessed by anyone. As far as numbers go I use 01, 02 etc. instead of 1, 2 etc. This way they don't getlisted out of sequence one you reach 11.
An example for your 2nd print server on campus 2

There is no set naming standard, per-se. It essentially comes down to whatever works best for you.

Things to take into consideration:
- the number of servers you have to name
- the tolerance of your organization for informality
- personality of the users

I have seen naming conventions using planets, Disney characters, Star Wars characters, Star Trek characters, mythological figures, etc.

If you have a large number of servers, it might make more sense to use names that describe location and function (or location and number such as you suggest). Otherwise you need a theme that would handle the number of servers you have.

Your organization may not tolerate "whimsical" naming conventions. "By god, I win't have customers connecting to a server called "Daffy!"

Your users may favor one convention over another. Plus remembering which server has which function can become problematic the more servers you have. "Is the mail server called Uranus, or Mars? I can never remember!"

If you look at reference books, almost all recommend using a combination of location, function, and number (if more than one server performs the same function).
