Server not shown in My network places

By jc931c ·
I have two identical servers connected to the same switch. I have network connectivity to both servers. I can ping both by name and address. I can access bother servers by going to "Run" and typing in \\servername. However if I go to My Network Places or Net Neighborhood, one of the servers shows up and the other doesen't. I am concerned that this may cause some problems down the road. Any suggestions?

Not a resolution, but a 'you are not alone' response. At my company, with 95 98, and 2K clients, browsing 'entire network' is on rare occasion unavailable, it may work on the next login which is puzzling. According to our net admin it's a bug in the OS. 'Net Use' and your \\ work fine. Would be very interested if this can be resolved.

There might be some issue with the Browsing Service. Check MSDN or MS KB sites for further reference & way around.

Also there is a registry key which can hide the PCs from displaying in Network Neighbourhood , but you can access the Pc by its UNC path. Search JSIINC.com for the registry key or MS KB.

Check your file and print settings on both servers and see if they match.

Make sure the server service isn't hanging on the one server.

We have this issue often, it's a bi-product of Microsoft's networking. ( We believe) However, as a workaround we have started using the find computer option under my network places. This seems to fix the problem on a per machine basis, really kind of a pain but works. (You need to enter the exact computer name)
