I have a minor question. I support a Novell 4.2 network with 40 nodes, running MAS 90 that is resident to the server and Office, resident to the workstation, files on the server. My experience has been more Windows NT. I have a CNA in Novell 4.11. That was several years ago. What are some of the most important variables to watch on the server, what are some base line figures to use, and how can I increase the performance, MAS 90 is a little slow. Over all the network functions OK. I would just like to keep my finger on the pulse of things.
Are there any good books on troubleshooting and optimizing Novell 4.x networks?

We instaLl a lot of Mas90. If have more than 10 users using Mas90 and aren't using the client / server version, you are asking for problems. We had Mas90 in a similar configuration and it was very slow even with as few as five users. We switchedto client server and were amazed by the added performance which requires an NT server box.
I'm pretty sure you can tweak Netware all you want but you will be hard pressed to gain any real performance in this Mas90 configuration. Good Luck!
The most common cause of slow-downs on NetWare servers when dealing with database applications is record locking. The defaults for NetWare are usually inadequate.
Look at:
maximum record locks maximum record locks per connection maximum filelocks maximum file locks per connection
Increase them dramatically and you should see some improvement.
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
