    Server received an incorrectly formatted

    Locked

    by bkelley ·

    I have the following setup.

Nt Server 4.0 Build 5 the clients are Windows 98, Windows 95 and Windows 98 SE

I keep getting this error message in event viewer.
The server received an incorrectly formatted request from \\edi

I have switchedout NIC cards and replaced cables. It doesn’t help. The users are not complaining. I just notice the messages when I check Event Viewer.

      Hello.
You do not say from what event log these msgs are logged. Also the source, category and event would be handy information to help diagnose this issue.

Also, if you could advise if your server is runngin Exchange, or DHCP or any services such as that – it would be helpful.

If you email me direct, I’ll post your response as a msg so you do not have to close the thread, or you could post an answert yourself, with the responses.

      Thanks

Well, I can tell you what the message means:
The server received an incorrectly formatted request from
This means that the specified computer sent an invalid SMB (server message block) which indicates a problem with the computer’s redirector. One thing to test, is the problem the same if you map a drive as opposed to using the UNC? I would expect it to be okay with the mapped drive and a sharing problem with the unc. Anyway, I’d reinstall the service pack (or upgrade it depending on what the server is running) and see if that helps.

This is obviously a client-end problem. You have not divulged whether \\edi is receiving any errors/having any problems on \\edi PC..

Look on \\edi and see what’s going on. Any strange or old programs running? Synchronize the timing of the errorswith the \\edi PC and once the event pops up, find out what the client \\edi was doing at the time…Logging in? Running a certain program? Browsing?

How often do you get the errors?
