server service missing from services mmc

I am running Windows XP SP2. How dose the server service just out of no where become a non-existent service? No longer listed in the services mmc. This causes a big problem when configuring local users and groups because you can not view the user properties when clicking on a tab. I have fixed the problem but I have no clue as to what it could be caused by..
