Server slow processing

By Borg7of9 ·
I have an accounting app that processed transactions very slowly. I re-boot the server and everthing is fine again for awhile. Any suggestions as to what I can check? It a novell 4.11 server with 10 workstations.

is it slow at the server or at the client.

There are many reasons both ways. You would want to try performance monitor to check whats going on, vendor website for any fixes/patches released since you bought it.
also, just for connection issues you want to at least do a netstat to find out if your application is flooding all its ports out, DoS against itself, etc
more info =)

Is the app just "residing" on the server's disk, and running on the workstations? You may want to have a look at the cache. Check, in Monitor.nlm on the server, the "Dirty Cache Buffers" and the "Current Disk Requests". Both should be going up and down all the time, but return to zero every few seconds. "Dirty.." refers to data that is in a queue to be written to disk, "Current.." is read-jobs that are waiting. By default the caching parameters are not to optimal, and most likely they haven't been touched, so my bet is that after a while those figures don't return to zero anymore, indicating badly tuned caching.
This little box is too small to explain everything, but there are very good documents on Novell's support site. Look at this one (there are no spaces in the URL):
http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?/2943356.htm

It explains very thoroughly how the caching (among other things) functions, and how you should tune properly.

Recently had a VERY big slowdown on our e-mail server (GroupWise). "Current Disk Request" were through the roof (600 to 800)and "Utilization" was 75 to 100%. So, check this out in Monitor.
Set cron.nlm to purge through toolbox on Sundays and now runs smoothly.
Get Novell TID 10060514.
