Server Tools

By kpettiet ·
We still have our NT 4.0 server and won't be upgrading it until next year. However, we're starting to add W2K Professional clients. How do I add the server tools for NT to these?

If you have the Win2K resource Kit, the NT4 tools are installed with that. Otherwise just copy the appropriate files from the server to your Win2K Pro machine. (ie: do a search for srvmgr.* and copy all the files to a folder on W2k.)
The NT4 server CD also includes all the admin tools in the Support (I think, or its in the Clients folder). But these are NT4SP1 versions and dont always work against a server running SP6.
An example is server manager. I was unable to Promote a BDC to PDC from the server manager included on the CD. I had to copy the srvmgr files from the NT4 server locally, then it worked.
