have 4 server network all 2k, looking to upgrade themto 2k3. 2 are dc's the other 2 are members. 1 member has exchange 2k running on it. i can't upgrade the exchange server due to exchange 2k isn't compatible with 2k3. will the others cause problems with exchange? couldn't find any exchange scheme info on the dc's. will i still need to run the ldf util? primary reason for upgrade is for the group policies. help please.

your gonna have to run adprep/forest prep and adprep/domain prep on the W2K boxes.Once you do that and then upgrade, use the ADMT to move users, groups, computers. it works pretty smoothly.

Exchange .... well, if you want to get rid of the W2K Exchange in favor of the W2003 Exchange, I suggest you use the the 2 step exmerge and get users to save all emails to pst files [and clean out their mailboxes]. It's a lot easier to move emails in a pst to a network share then then import them to Outlook than moving emails from one exchange mailbox to another. Best to do this on a weekend when you can take the Exchange Servers offline. Best to the whole think on the weekend. Think 8 hrs minimum. 16 hours to make sure the whole thing is running smoothly.

thank you for replying, the question i need to know about is will upgrading the dc's cause a problem with the member exchange server? i am planning on leaving the exchange server as is. i am concerned about the exchange scheme, even though i don't see any reference to it in the AD... will i need to run the InetOrgPersonPrevent.ldf before upgrading.

Correct, Exchange 2000 is incompatible with Windows 2003. You must upgrade to Exchange 2003 first before upgrading to Windows 2003 on the Exchange server. Other servers shoul be able to upgrade ok.
For the DCs, you must run ADPREP to upgrade the schema for 2003 Active Directory before upgrading the 2000 DCs.

here is a chart on Exchange 2000 in a Windows Environment. It shows that Exchange 2000 SP2 on a Windows 2000 server can be in a Windows 2003 AD environment with W2003 Server DCs. Read this article carefully as there are caveats and information pertaining to mangled attributes.

There should be no problem running Exchange 2000 in either a 2000 or a 2003 AD domain. No schema changes are required as the existing ones will work in either. We have been running mixed systems for a while!
