    Server Use

    Locked

    by jmiller ·

I have an NT network with 100 machines and 6 NT 4 servers. I have one PDC, one BDC, one mail, and 3 application servers. Being a smaller network, I have several of the servers doubling as WINS, DHCP, File, and Print servers. Are there general guidelines for assigning these functions to servers?

It looks pretty OK. There shouldn’t be any problem with WINS or DHCP, I would use the PDC or BDC for these functions. Make sure that you have correctly configured the option for the Server service in Network Control Panel. You should have chosen “Maximize Throughpout for Network Applications” in your applications and mail servers and these should have as much RAM as possible, while you have “Maximize Throughput for File Sharing” for the file and print servers.

A lot has to depend on the types of server (CPU, memory, HD….etc), usage/traffic and company’s take on performance and reliability.

      I would look at:

1- DO I have a backup in case one of the server go down?

2- Am I putting the fastest machine on most time crucitical application?

3- Have I taken the unnecessary services (web, DHCP client…etc) out of the servers?

Note: also look at network traffic to see if there is a bottleneck(no fast machine can’t run on congested network).
