Server Virtualisation - is hardware consolidation and DR reason enough?

By Chrisfc ·
Hi All,
Our organisation is ready to push through with some upgrades.

We're running 2x IBM servers (235/335) on Windows 2000 with one being our exchange server, the other our SQL server. We have a few other applications running (accounts/CRM etc)

The organisation has tripled in size (was 25, now 75), however we've been waiting until resources are available to upgrade. This will happen soon;

Should we go virtual with VMware, or is this for the datacentre only?

I'm seriously looking at a server with a lot of RAM and processing power, on which I can install 3/4 Server 2k3 instances.

From what I can see;
DR is easier - no more bare metal rebuilds
Lower TCO on hardware and running costs

I'd love to hear from others with similar experience or insight.

Not Really Better...

While both sides have the pros and cons, I personally feel that, in an organization that is as small as yours, there is really no need to go virtual. In most cases, moving servers from a physical to virtual is due to lack of physical space and a constant need to replace and upgrade servers.
