Server Virtualisation – is hardware consolidation and DR reason enough?

by chrisfc . Updated 19 years, 1 month ago

Hi All,
Our organisation is ready to push through with some upgrades.

We’re running 2x IBM servers (235/335) on Windows 2000 with one being our exchange server, the other our SQL server. We have a few other applications running (accounts/CRM etc)

The organisation has tripled in size (was 25, now 75), however we’ve been waiting until resources are available to upgrade. This will happen soon;

Should we go virtual with VMware, or is this for the datacentre only?

I’m seriously looking at a server with a lot of RAM and processing power, on which I can install 3/4 Server 2k3 instances.

From what I can see;
DR is easier – no more bare metal rebuilds
Lower TCO on hardware and running costs

I’d love to hear from others with similar experience or insight.
Regards,
Chris
