Service Database is Locked

By skelley77 ·
When I try to access anything under Network Properties including add, remove
and properties. If I try to open TCP/IP Properties I get "Service Database
is Locked" The Network Properties Dialog window quits responding and the
only way to get rid of the window is to restart the server. On shutdown I
get rundll32.exe not responding. What do I need to do to correct this
problem.

If reapplying the Service Pack does not fix the problem then the best thing to do is boot in VGA mode remove all network items and reinstall after reboot into Normal mode.

When do you try to access the network properties? I had this same problem after I reboot but if I wait until the machine loads all its services...3 minutes...then I am able to access it.....what does your event viewer say?

One of the services you start during your boot sequence is dragging its feet in starting. The "service database is locked" only means some service has not started and you cannot access some functions until it has timed out. Wait for the service database to become unlocked, the most I've had to wait in the past is 30 minutes. Some service or device will not have started. Disable that service, reboot and fix the problem.

Rundll32 is a royal pain but it is used by many things. Especially network related things. I fixed a problem like this by accessing the computer in question over the network, when no one was logged on, and copited the file across the network, rebooted and everything was fine again. Sometimes the latest service pack will not fix this kind of issue.

You were right on. I found SQL Server was not starting and hanging the Service Database on startup. As soon as I disabled the service everything worked great. Thanks! Now to figure out the SQL problem.....
