Service Packs

By verd ·
Hello all,
I am running Windows 2000 on my production box. I have 2 more boxes running win2k and one with win2k server. I have updated the boxes to service pack 4 on the 2 secondary boxes and the server without a problem. On these I did not do the back up to uninstall. On my production box I am running a dual boot win2k and win98. I have a 1.2 gig processor and 512 RAM. I have tried both Service Pack 3 and 4 with the back to uninstall. On each Service Pack (3 and 4) when finished my computer freezes up upon running any applications. Service Pack 2 installed without a problem and that is what I am currently running. I can't afford to have my production box down to install without the back up. Once I uninstall 3 or 4 and go back to 2 everthing is fine once again. Does anyone have an idea why I can not update the service pack. Oh, Both of these updates where done via a CD from Microsoft

see if there are any updates for the applications that you are running first.
second: before installing the updates stop the applications and then install the service pack.
and last and maybe the best option is to go to and select at the right hand pane the windows update catalog.

I remember reading about a patch regarding that certain applications won't start or having difficulties after installing service pack, so try to download the patch first (or again update the program)

This may not apply, but there is a hot patch after SP2 that fixes some app problems. Check here: Maybe install that and try again.

Also, I would run spybot and I assume you did a virus scan. Be sure to update spybot, alot of newer spyware that attacks the LSP layer and causes hangs. Just some things to try.
