For windows, click Start then Run then type winver and <enter>.
for internet explorer, and most other programs, from within the program, open the program, and from the Help menu, pick About Internet Explorer (might be About Microsoft Word or About Acrobat Reader).
as for the Java stuff, tell us more. what browser, what version, more exact details of message.

The list of system information that Belarc Advisor creates gives you details of the service pack level, and installed updates.

For XP, you can right click on the My Computer icon, select properties.
On the General tab, it will list your version of XP, and if Service Pack 1 is installed.

I assume that you are using Internet Explorer.
The downloading JAVA means that web sites are installing software on your system.

Open IE.
Click on Tools, Internet Options.
Click on the Advanced tab.
In the Browser section, make sure that both "Enable Install on Demand" boxes are unchecked.

Sites may still want to install software, but this will give you the option to install only when you wish to.
