Services/Progs load order

By myplums ·
XPsp2 on NB connecting to network last.

Is there a way to pre-defined the load order of services/progs during start-up? Maybe a 3rd party prog out there to do the job?
Have honed down start progs thru msconfig and registry to no avail. Totally Virus/adware/spyware etc free

Any help appreciated

Regards to all.

Hi

I do not know if it is possible to change the order in which Windows Services load.

The only way I know of to force programs to load in a specified order is through your Start>All Programs>Startup menu. As you know, all programs listed here will start once Windows starts.

What you need to do is create a batch file that lists the program commands in the order you want them to run. You can get the program commands from msconfig.

so, open notepad and type the following

@echo off
start /wait 1st program command
start /wait 2nd program command
start /wait 3rd program command
Exit

then save it as filename.bat and drag it into the Startup folder on your Start menu. The @echo off line suppresses a visual display of what is happening. If you remove this line, then a DOS box will temporarily open and you will see the commands being executed. The Exit command will close the box, otherwise it will stay open - which is handy if you want to see any error messages. The start /wait part tells the command to execute but the next command will not be processed by the batch file until the present one has finished.

Good luck

Ah good idea Blackcurrant will try the .bat file to hopefully delay program starts - back in a few days to let you know.

i don't know. have you checked out the free and pay tools available from www.systeminternals.com
tools to monitor installs - registry changes and process dependencies. seems to me that would have to give you what you are looking for.
we need more exact details: steps to reproduce the error.
also do you use HiJack this? good for instant look at host and search hijacks...

Thanks sarge, I don't use any third party s/w to monitor. As for error, I don't really have one, The reason I am asking is that on boot up this little sweetheart loads about everything and its dog, before going and looking for network services, it can be up to 3-4 minutes before it acknowledges the wireless LAN connection exists which can get boring after a while or particularly when you are in a hurry. I just wondered if there was a known way of giving the network stuff priority. This was also true of an RJ45 building LAN connection the other day.

failing all else I might rebuild it.

Once again thanks for the input.

Here is one I used to use in W98 since it had such a problem, and it is supposed to work in XP.
