Set Custom Page Size with XP

By Gregg S ·
We upgraded to a Win XP PC which has as one of its functions printing labels in Access to an Epson LQ-570+ ESC/P2 dot matrix printer. However, the XP driver does not allow the use of custom paper size, a feature which I use in order to properly print the labels. Consequently, I have not been able to print labels from this PC. The Win 95/98 drivers allow this, so I can print from the older PC's. I have not been able to find a driver that would allow this with XP. I have tried to use generic drivers, but I cannot get them to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions to how to handle this situation?

You have run into 1 of the hidden costs of upgrading to XP.

My personal rule for ALL hardware, and printers and scanners in particular is:

If the manufacture does NOT offer a driver download for XP assume that you will need to replace the device.

For the majority of printers that the only source of drivers is Windows, the drivers tend to be limited to "standard" printer functions.

You might try running the application in compatibility mode and load the W98 driver there.

Otherwise, it's new printer time.

A good reason to hang on to the Win98 OS...

Using XP with NTFS and Win98 with FAT32, you should be able to set up a dual boot arrangement (two OSs in the same partition).

Alternatively a good partition software can be had for less cost than a new printer - I favour V-com's System Commander but Partition Magic is also highly rated. This installs each OS in it own separate primary partitions.

Good alternative, but not what I want to do at present. If I worked here full time to oversee it, it might be a viable method.

Open 'printer and faxes' panel, right click the white part of your 'printer and faxes' window (the empty window area). You should see a popup menu, click 'Server Properties'

Click create new form check box... name your new form... set the custome size, and now you can choose your new custom paper into any printer you have

I do not like calling this unacceptable, but in the meantime we purchased a printer specifically for labeling which solved the problem. Thank for the attempt and sorry for the delay in reponding--I forgot about the post.
