Set SATA drive as removable in Windows 2003

By Will Fastie ·
A Windows 2003 server I support has an after-market SATA controller connecting a removable drive bay. 400GB drives are used for backup.

How do I make the server see these drives as removable so I can swap them without restarting the server?

Depends on the SATA controller

If the controller supportss hot swap devices then it shouldn't be a problem. However that will requiure the RAID to be configured by the card, not windows.

I would check with the manufacturer on the card and if it supports hot swap. You maay only need to flash the firmware on the device.

Best of luck
