I assume this is a fresh clean installation of Windows 95 or 98.

Start by installing the chip-set drivers for the motherboard.
You can download the drivers from the system or motherboard manufacture.
Alternately, you can download the reference drivers from the chip-set manufacture.
(The chip-set is the 2 largest ICs on the motherboard after the CPU.)

Then, identify who made the video card or graphics processor IC, and download the proper drivers.
Check the readme file, or installation instructions for the drivers.
Many video drivers require that DirectX be installed (available from Microsoft)
DO NOT install a newer version of DirectX than the one supported by the video driver.

If you have a unique monitor, you may need to install the manufactures driver for the monitor.

If you are unable to determine the manufaturer/model of your adapter, use a diagnostic utility to identify it for you. A great utility (and it's free) is available from

Good luck

You need to find out the make and model of your video-card and monitor. Then visit their respective website to get the latest drivers for your operating system.

Install the video-card driver first, reset your machine, then install the monitor driver. You should then have adapter settings to fix your color, resolution, and refresh rate to what you need.
