Setting up a server

I am about to install my first Network (business)..Although i have done networking at home, this is for a friends small business.
Just a quick question please?……He is purchasing MS Small business Network (not sure which version)….Is it a standalone O/S?…(ie, you dont require Windows 2000 server?)

thanks for any help
