Setting up Disk Quotas in Windows Server 2003

Are you trying to configure Disk Quotas and when you click on that users drive, it shows the entire drive and NOT what you assigned to them? Have you clicked on their drive and it says “Not Accessible”? This step by step documentation will help you out.

In configuring Disk quotas for a mapped drive, its not about group policies, its about permissions. One problem I ran into was after I configured the users Home Folder from their profile \\Server\Folder\%username%, I would click on the drive and it said “Drive not accessible” This error was easily fixed by going to the actual Home Folder, clicking on the Share tab, then Permissions tab, and allowing the Authenticated Users group access. It doesn’t necessarily have to be Authenticated Users, it could be the Users Group or Domain Users, whatever floats your boat.

Now the problem I was having that google or anything couldn’t help was users being able to see the whole drive and the quota not working. After pulling my hair out, I realized it was about ownership.

Starting from the Drive itself, lets call it H:\, go to the Security Tab and then click on Advanced. While in the Permissions Tab, edit the Adminstrator or Administrators. Make sure you select “This folder only” where it says “Apply onto:”. Check all the tabs EXCEPT for Take Ownership, leave that blank.

Do that exact same thing for the Home Folder. Make sure you select “This folder only” where it says “Apply onto:”

Now in the users folder, add the user of that folder and give that user Full Control. Next click on the Owner tab, add the user in and make him owner of that folder.

Thats it. If you’re reading this you already know how to setup quotas for each individual user.

Make sure to logoff then log back on and you will see the drive no longer shows the entire amount and you have access to the drive.
