Setting up LAN/Internet share

By blmeissner ·
What is the best way to set up a small LAN/Internet share without a router. Client has a hub, 98 machines. Should I upgrade one machine to Win 2000 and set it up as a server?

Depends on your need

You could turn on file/print sharing at the machines you want and let people share files that they want shared. Sounds like you have an office with people wanting to have a common directory or somthing. W9x is really not the platform you want handling file sharing.(it works but not well) You should build a small server and let them share files out of a common directory there.

Hi, see if the client will splurge for a switch to replace the hub, better performance, security etc.

Set up a Win2K or NT 4.0 stand alone server and configure the share/shares on it. You could do it on one of the 98 machines, make sure you set it up as a server via system properties => performamce => file system => drop down the arrow and select file server, but you will run into difficulties if your clients do heavy i/o. Hope this helps, good luck.
