i'm trying to set up my SUSE Linux to work with my cable modem. This modem assigns me the ip address automatically. In the linux documentation i can't find any setting which allows automatic ip Address assigning. does anyone know how i can set up mysystem so the ip address is automatically assigned?

OK, you have to set your machine as a DHCP client. The simplest way to do this with SUSE is to run yast and enter the correct information (you need to get the IP of the DHCP Server from your Provider) under System administration -> Network -> DHCP Client. That should be it.
Depending on your ISP, mou may be able to get a static IP address. If not, DHCP is not hard to set up. Go to: http://rlz.ne.mediaone.net/linux/ for some great Linux firewalling and cable modem links.
The easiest way to do this is through Linuxconf. From the command prompt type Linux Then click on Networking--> Client Tasks-->basic host information. In the right-hand window, select adaptor 1, then click on the checkbox for dhcp. Exit linuxconfthen reboot. This should get you conncected to your ISP.
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
