Setting up networked PC's to view each o

By salmeciga ·
We are running a network NT4.0 server with 10 PC's on a hub. Problem is we just got DSL service on the server and I can't access any of the computer's on the network through the router. If I disconnect the router and just put my hub on the server, then all is cool in OZ, but I'd like to be able to set it up where all PC's go through the hub to the router and then the server so all PC's will be able to get online and be seen on the network.

Note: I did notice that some IP addresses are different.

Any suggestions on resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I will need more specific info to give you a definitive answer, since it all depends on your TCP/IP config. and your router config. Assuming your PCs will have PRIVATE IP addresses and your ISP will be automatically assigning an IP address to your router, the best most secure way to do this is using NAT (network address translation) (assuming your router can do this). If your router is NAT capable, you simply need to enable NAT on the router. The router has to have an IP address on your local (private) subnet and be set up properly with the ISP's gateway and DNS server addresses and configured to get a public IP address from your ISP's DHCP server. This is very secure, also, sort of like having a very simple firewall, since all of yourinternal PCs are effectively hidden from the Internet. Also, you need to be sure your router is set to uplink to the internal hub if you are connecting it to an internal hub - this is usually controlled by a push button or switch on the router itself. If you can't do

1. Ask your ISP for public addresses for your network. That should solve the router problem, which won't route your private IPs to the server, which I assume now has a public address.
2. Use a NAT and/ or proxy on server if your ISP won't give you a subnet of public addresses. Put the router to the external DSL connection, as you don't need it on the LAN. Put 2 NICs in the server, one connected to router>DSL, one to LAN's HUB.
