Setting VPN with Linsys BEFSX41

By cchassociates ·
My office has a small network with three PC and share a internet connection via a Linsys VPN cable router BEFSX41. I would like to set up VPN so I can access my office from home. I need to know how to configure the router and the PC connecting to the router on my office network. Any help please ?

What VPN server software is your work using? Are you running "server" at work? The VPN server software will determine which VPN client you need to use.

If there's no server at work running VPN services, then the option I tend to recommend for very small offices is to setup a PCAnywhere host server at work with a good password, and then your client computers (remote) would use PCAnywhere to connect to the server, login and use the server (or another computer available from it).

PCAnywhere is just one brand, there's a lot of them out there...

If you do choose the PCAnwhere option, then open udp/tcp ports 5632 and 5631 on your router, forward to the ip address of the server waiting as PCAnywhere host, and you should be good to go.

The easiest way to do this is to put another BEFSX41 at home and configure the same security settings at both end.
Make sure each are comnfigured as a gateway rather tha a router. Be sure to make sure that your work LAN address (e.g 192.168.1.1)is different from your home LAN address (e.g 192.168.2.1).
I also have the BEFSX41 at home but am using the BEFVP41 at work which will support 70 vpn tunnels rather than only 2 in the BEFSX41.
This option is easier than configuring your pc for IPSEC in order to establish the tunnel to the BEFSX41. Doing it this way will require no changes to your home PC whether it be a desktop or Portable, your connection can be permanently on with multiple PC's at both ends.

As an afterthought if you are using workgroups make sure your home pc is named with the same workgroup as your work pc's otherwise you wont see any pc's at the other end of the vpn from either end after you establish the vpn connection.
