Setup VPN on a Cisco router

By awoods ·
I have a 2621 Cisco router as my Gateway to my ISP via a T1 line. My router is setup with DHCP and a firewall. I need to provide the ability for my users to use VPN. What ports do I open on my router to allow VPN to punch thru my router?

There are many kinds of VPN. Are you running IPSEC, PPTP or . . .

For IPSEC you use UDP 500 and PROTOCOL 50 or 51. This is not a port number so the access list would be:

access-list 101 permit 50 "source + mask" "destination + mask"

He is exactly right. In the future if you are curious here is the site to get all port numbers for each different type of protocol:
http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers

Remember, it is better to apply access-list outbound on your LAN/Ethernet interface. It uses less CPU time on the router. You may also want to get an encryption accelerator if you don't already have one.
