Setup.exe

By will_mansell ·
Windows NT 4.0 SP6a workstation upon login is running the following:

c:\winnt\system32\setup.exe

The file is dated 8/12/96 and is 25KB.

Does anyone know what this is? interstingly enough if I manually run it I get the following message:
"Please go to Control Panel to install and configure system components"

I cannot find a reference in the registry to it.

Any input appreciated.

Setup.exe

It looks like running it is the leftover from a failed installation of something, possibly SP6a. The program itself is a stub which is supposed to configure a package after the reboot at the end of installation. It should be running against some file which tells it what it should do.

If a search of the registry for "setup" does not find something, search the \winnt directory for files with "setup" in them as text. It may be running from an ini file. If that fails, there is a Techrepublic article (somewhere) that lists a long list of places to look for (and kill) auto-starting programs.

Good luck.
