Share Folders: Open Files - Blank "Accessed By" Field

After a few unsuccessful searches through the forums, I'm posting my first question....

Can anyone tell me a reason my users lose their associations to, and access to, files in their respective shared folders? The shares are on a Windows 2003 SP1 file server. When I open Computer Management>Shared Folders>Open Files and take a look I can see the files are still open but the "Accessed By" field is blank. Closing the Open File fixes the immediate access problem, but I'd really like to know the root cause of this problem.
