Shared Drives drop and will not restore

By CurtisInterruptus ·
On a straight Windows 2000 network with shared drives: with the timeout set to 30 minutes, some units' shared drives drop out (red X) and when you click, they return ok, others lock up and give an error message similar to the following: "Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use. The connection has not been restored." On units that are running critical apps locally but with their data files on shared drives, this causes us lost data and sometimes locked apps. I havechanged NICS, double-check NIC settings, played with timeout values, even turned the timeout OFF totally, with little to no luck. Any ideas?

I did a little looking around and the only information I saw that may be of value was in:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q303339&

It is not directly related to your question...but in the other references I found to your problem almost all of the recommendations were to upgrade to a newer Service Pack (SP3 or higher).

You don't mention your SP level, but if its under 3, I'd take a look there first.

Good luck!

I defnitely appreciate the help, Grant, but I already installed SP3 on all affected machines! But it definitely looked like it might fix it by reading that article!

Thanks again!

Curt

It is affecting a large number of systems, but I recreated three of the worst offenders' profiles about two weeks ago with no apparent effect. Thanks anyway!!!!
