What is "Shared memory" that is spoken of DELL computer advertisements?

Shared memory means that the system memory (ram) is shared with the video card. Example, if you have 125 megs of memory installed, and the video card uses 32 megs of memory, this means you have 93 megs of memory left to run the rest of the computer. Hope this help, Frank

stroke311 is right with a caveat. built in video adapters. For the built in video adapter, main memory is shared. Great for laptops in saving space and good for desktops where the buyer wants solid graphics that will support video playback and video games without spending a small fortune on AGP slot graphics cards. But if you go with buying a seperate graphics card, then one disables the built in graphics adapter which frees up that memory.
