Shared vs Dedicated Broadband for a Busi

By misgateway ·
I work at a not-for-profit agency (read "no money to spend"). We are currently accessing the internet using 128K ISDN in our main building with about 50 occasional users, and about a dozen fairly heavy users.

As we are driven more to web basedapplications for reporting and interacting with various other agencies, we are finding we need to increase our bandwidth.

The only broadband access choices we have available are satelite (forget it), DSL and wireless.
I have two quotes -1.the wireless option is
shared access at 1500Kbps Download and
512Kbps Upload for $129.00 per month.
2.the DSL is dedicated bandwidth at 256K both
ways for $179 per month.
Both include 1 static IP address.

I have a remote office with Cable access that I would like to set up to VPN into the main building to use some Access databases.

Any thoughts on which way is better? I have been given some advice that I would actually see better performance on the dedicated 256K line than on the shared wireless.

The question is more an issue of the bandwidth you will get to the Internet then the bandwidth provided by the ISP. Although the ISP speed is important the traffic that goes through them to the Internet is just as critical. A vendor can offer you a 512K pipe to the there head end but "over sell" there outbound connection so heavily that you are getting much less actual throughput to the net. I would talk with both vendors and see if they will give references. Then talk with the references and ask them to run some bandwidth test (there are many on the net). This will give you a much better idea of what the true bandwidth will be.

Definitely you're going to have a better performance using a DSL-256K line than shared wireless and your current 128K ISDN.

>> use a switch and a router to share the
DSL static IP address to all your users.

other option is,

>> youcould also share your cable access from
your remote office using VPN but you gotta
have to source it out from a qualified
technician for better and correct performance.

send me e-mail if you'd like to learn more about the secondoption, include your company's computer system setup.
