Shareing a Drive

By nhoek ·
I just installed Win 98 SE and after adding print/file shareing I am tying to assign users to the share but am getting an error message that is as follows.

"You cannot view the list of users at this time. Please try again later".

I am runningWin NT Server 4.0.

Anyone have any ideas?

Shareing a Drive

by Parbo In reply to Shareing a Drive

CAUSE
=====

This behavior can occur for either of the following reasons:

- Outlook Express is installed on your computer and the "Make Outlook Express
my default Simple MAPI client" check box is selected.

- You have uninstalled Outlook 97, Outlook 98, Office 97 or Office 98.
Uninstalling these products removes the Mapi32.dll file, which is needed to
share folders, from your computer.

RESOLUTION
==========

To work around this problem, use the appropriate method:
Using Outlook Express
---------------------

1. Restart your computer.

2. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Internet Explorer, and then click
Outlook Express.

3. On the Tools menu, click Options.

4. On the General tab, click the "Make Outlook Express my default Simple MAPI
client" check box to clear it, and then click Apply.

5. Click OK when you receive the following prompt:

The Simple MAPI client has been changed. You may need to restart your machine for the change to take effect.

6. Click OK.

NOTE

- If you do not restart your computer in step 1, you may receive the
following error message when you click OK: The Simple MAPI Client could
not be changed because MAPI is already in use. Close all mail enabled
applications and restart your machine. Then retry this option. This error
message may occur even if Outlook Express is the only mail program that is
currently running.

7. Quit Outlook Express, and then restart your computer.

Uninstalled Outlook 97/98 and Office 97/98
------------------------------------------

Extract a new copy of the Mapi32.dll file to the Windows\System folder.

The Mapi32.dll file can be found in the following location:

- Net7.cab cabinet file on the Windows 98 CD-ROM.

hope this works

Since you didn't state it, I'll ask the obvious first question.

Do you have your w98se client set to login to an NT domain? ... and do your users have accounts on the server?

BTW, answer #1 rocks. I've been having problems with Samba 2.2.0a and w98 clients myself. Can't wait to try the MAPI solution and see if it fixes my problem as well. :)

I do not have the option of unchecking the Mapi Client in Outlook express. I do not use outlook express I use Outlook 98, which I have not uninstalled. Also I tried copying over the Mapi32.dll and that didn't help.

I have set this PC up the same as all the others. I two PCs that have this problem. I can see the entire network but I can not grab the list of users when trying to share.

Any more ideas?

It's just a wild guess, but maybe you could try to install the NetBEUI protocol, and/or install the NWLink protocol.

Don't ask me why, but that could solve your problem..! (found in the MS TechNet DB)
