Sharing an external hard drive

By gerryhancock ·
Hi folks
I would be grateful for any help on this problem. In my scholl we have a wired network running under server 2003.Teachers also have laptops which connect to internet using 4 access points. The teachers do not have to log into the network to do this. I have bought an external drive which I would like to make available to the teachers using the network. Ideally I would like it to be accessible whther they are logged into the network or just using access point. Is this possible. If not I would be happy if they could share it just through the wireles connection and not through the school network.

Thanks everyone
Gerry Hancock

Well it all depends on what you have there

A normal External Drive that connects through either USB or Firewire isn't a good full time device as the Drive Enclosures allow the drive to get too hot and shorten the life of the Drive & Associated Electronics. So if you have one of these you would have to backup often to minimise the posibility of Data Loss.

However if you have a Device that Plugs into a RJ45 Socket it's called a Network Attached Storage Device which is totally different beast. Most NAS Devices are open to all comers so they shouldn't be a problem as they have their own Individual IP Address which can be controlled from the Server depending on the GP's used.

If it is a USB/Firewire Enclosure this needs to be connected to a Computer that is always on so the Server would be the ideal starting point. All that is then required is the normal Share Option run from the Server and depending on what is involved to allow the teachers to access the Server the device should be available. Just bear in mind that if it's one of these you need to expect Drive Failures on a more regular basis.
