Sharing Cable Modem Connection

By lmcdonald ·
I have a Win XP machine connected to a cable modem. I have a Win98 machine with a 3Com NIC card. Can I install a router and run a CatV(?) cable to connect the Win98 to the internet also?

Yes, but!

There are 2 basic ways to set up this sharing.

If the XP PC connects to the cable modem using a NIC and a CAT 5 cable, I recommend installing a cable router between the PC and the cable modem.

Then you can connect your other PCs directly to the router as individual clients with very little setup required.

If the cable modem connects to the PC using a USB connection, you need to set up Internet Connection Sharing on the XP box.

You will need a NIC in the XP box.
You can connect both PCs either with a crossover cable, or using a switch or hub.
(I vote for the switch as it will be easier to add more computers later that way.)

After you install ICS on the XP box, you can create a ICS client setup floppy.
You take the floppy to the W98 box and set it up as a client for ICS.

Remember, both PCs need to have the same workgroup name, and unique computer names.

For further information, check out the ICS tutorials at www.wown.com

Also, with a broadband connection, I recommend installing a software firewall on BOTH PCs.

Purchase a Linksys BEFSR41 EtherFast? Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch. Under $50.00

Both computers will plug in to the built in switch. Both computers will surf and be able to share files.

Good Luck Lee

ICS is microsofts pox on mankind. It may be a necessary evil in some cases. But not yours.
The sharing computer has to be on for any machine to access the internet.

In your case the linksys solution is cheap and reliable.
