sharing internet access

I am sorry but I don't understand why you would want to share an internet connection via IrDA. It isn't really suitable for this purpose.

Instead (if you don't want to add a network card into each of the laptops) you could connect the laptops (as long as they are no more than 5m apart) via a USB cable (USB v1.0 runs at 12mb and v2.0 runs at 600mb) or you could use a firewire cable which runs at 400mb.

Once the laptops are connected then run ICS - Interent connection Sharing (I think w98 - XP) on the machine connected to the internet which will run you through the necessary steps of sharing your connection.

Hope this helps.
