Username must be unique. Password must be a minimum of 6 characters and have any 3 of the 4 items: a number (0 through 9), a special character (such as !, $, #, %), an uppercase character (A through Z) or a lowercase (a through z) character (no spaces).
There is a Registry entry to change to control this. I have never looked for this entry, though.
I always change this from within TweakUI, the Microsoft free REgistry tweak program they have out. You can change it from the big arrow that is the default to either a smaller arrow, nothing at all, or your own custom picture.
As Joseph stated, installing TweakUI for your version of Windows is the easiest and safest way to adjust the shortcut arrow, and many other Windows User Interface options.
For Windows 98, if ALL updates are installed, you can no longer change or remove the arrow on shortcuts.
When Microsoft fixed a security issue with Shell32.dll, they also disabled the option to change the appearance of shortcut icons.
If removing the arrows is more important to you than system security, you need to replace shell32.dll with the older version.
