Should I chang to a switch??

By psycho_nole ·
Hello, here's my question...
Right now I have a cable modem going into a router, which in turn runs to a hub. There are 4 computers connected to the hub. For the most part, the connections are just used for the internet, but occasionally we use each other's hard drives to back things up while reformatting or trying out new OSs (ie linux). My current hub is a 10 mbps hub...my question is...should I upgrade to a 10/100 hub or spend a few extra bucks and get a switch??? Thanks for the help.

With only 4 computers you really don't need a switch. A 10/100 autosensing hub should be fine and is considerably cheaper than a switch. The main difference between a switch and a hub is that the switch is smarter. With a hub each computer will broadcast to the entire network which can cause collisions. A switch knows where the data is supposed to go and only sends it there instead of broadcasting to the entire network thus reducing the chance of collisions.

Since it only seems that you use the hub for the internet with the occasional usage of one anothers hard drives, I would recommend that you only go to a 10/100 hub. The main question to ask yourself is if you are going to be adding more computers in the not too distant future and are you going to increasing your uses for the network. If the answer is yes, the spend the extra for a switch because the 10/100 switch would only be a temporary fix until you grow.

If you are not going to go much past 4 PC's, the hub will give you SLIGHTLY faster performance. Intel has a good white paper at their web site where they tested performance, and they found that with 4 users, a hub outperformed a switch. At 8 users it's about even. Just be sure to get a 10/100 hub to increase your bandwidth.

A hub is fine for your purposes (four computers, occasional LAN use). If you want to increase speed of transfer all of your N.I.C.'s need to be 100 as well, and make sure that your cables are cat5. Just replacing the hub won't bump you up to 100TX speed if the other components aren't compatable.
