The developers I know of run the latest Mac and Microsoft OSes. They are pretty fearless and need to know if the apps have an issue on the OS that Apple is shipping NOW. As to older OSes the office and developers keep some old laptops running older OSes if the client has a lot of users hanging back.

It’s always great to get the latest updates as it has new features and is better looking. But, the later can also cause problems for your MacBook(I own 2015 MacBook as well), like stuttering when swiping in from right to open notification or widget area. Personally, I wouldn’t sacrifice a smooth experience for some extra features. So if you ask me I’d say stick with Catalina.

I’m running Big Sur on MBAir ”2013 and it’s working well. At least, I did not notice slowdowns, it was relatively slow on Catalina, so it stayed with Big Sur 🙂
In any case, if you’d like to reduce any risks, make a Time Machine backup before upgrading, so you could easily revert back, it thing go south.
