Should I move to US?

By gagulati ·
Hi All,

I have 5.5 years+ in IT and today I am drawing a good salary in Chennai. I get offers from US to join on H1B visa. But all the consultants offer the starting salary around 60K-62K p.a. That is like starting my career again from scratch.
Should I move to US? I have never been there before. But I know this salary could be bad if I consultant send me to California (as it is expensive) but if it is some other state, it could be good offer.

Thanks, Gaurav

What exactly is "p.a.?" Is that short for rupees?

At the current rate of 1 Indian rupee = 0.0226438 U.S. dollars that would equate to 1403.92 dollars and we pay fast food workers more per year.

Wht is the salary in US dollars they are discussing, what is the work and where is the position located?

Totally missed that Per Annum reference Doc J, good catch.

Depends on what city they are discussing that money. What city is it?

I think he means 'per annum', slightly colloquial abbreviation but understandable; 62k us$ / year

hey, no more $.35 for all you can eat rice and yellow lentils on a banana leaf, like I saw on a tv show from south of india. the cheapest for a sandwich is $1 for a very small dead-cow burger.

MANY places (usually in or near big cities) in US are expensive. I've heard H1-B people tend to rent 4 or 5 to an apartment to save costs.

Just look at your current situation - do you have a space to grow? Is it "the top salary in your area"? How easy can you find another job for the same money? Do you have a perspective for a professional growth or you could stuck in this position for a years? How safe is the area you live? Is it safe to tell your neighbors and friends that you have a good job and getting a good salary?

Now look at the "US offer". 60K is a pretty good salary for US, especially for a beginer (no offence, but 5 years in IT is not much). But getting iinto the US may give you a chance to get a new technologies, get ceritfications, get expereince, and who knows, may be in a couple years you could get into the 100k salary range. But if you wouldn't try - you will never get there.
