Should you implement distributed firewalling?

By debate ·
What do you think about the viability of distributed firewalling? How much attention does your organization devote to private network security? Do you agree with Jonathan Yarden that this can be a larger concern than perimeter security? Share your comments about the potential of distributed firewalling, as discussed in the Jan. 10 Internet Security Focus newsletter.

an additional layer of core security is growing and is being recognized as such. Only when security can be enabled on every node of the network where sensitive data is held will the enterprise be truly secure.

Unfortunately, options for core security, such as Trusted Operating Systems, are limited, and come out of the defense paradigm where cost factors are secondary to overall security and therefore are often impractical and unaffordable for the commercial enterprise.

As the perimeter becomes more porous due to new technologies such as wireless, trying to move perimeter technologies into the core will likely prove to be a costly and imperfect solution.
