"Show Desktop" Icon

By slconst ·
I had accidentally erase off the icons "Show Desktop" from the taskbar and I believe this is not a shortcut. I had tried to search the files from the system hoping to pull out a shortcut from there and dump into the taskbar. I used this icon very often because I got the habit of saving temporary files in the desktop and hence very often, I need to open the desktop when I am in other windows like internet / Outlook Express, etc. Please help, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

You will need to use notepad to create a file and place it back in your quicklaunch folder.

See the instructions here:

To force Notepad to use the exact filename ShowDesktop.scf, enclose the entire filename with extension in quotes, ("")

I logged on to the website you suggested but it was of no help to me because both my MICROSOFT & INTERNET EXPLORER folder was on two different path. My MICROSOFT is at "C:\WINDOWS\system32\%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\My........" and INTERNET EXPLORER at ?C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer?.
Moreover, I didn?t backup my system and hence never dare to try since I only got basic knowledge of system troubleshooting.
Anyway, thanks a lot for your kind advise.

Hi,

You could try creating a shortcut to the desktop.
For w98 go to folder windows and find the folder desktop. Right click on it and send to desktop, then drag the icon on the desktop to the quick start bar.
On W2k or XP the desktop folder is under your user name.

Go to your home page click on file go down to send and choose send shortcut to desktop. It will have the explorer icon and your ISP / homepage on it. You can rename it if you want.
