More information would help

by nepenthe0 In reply to Shut down!

Is this a desktop or laptop? What model? How old?

The first thing that comes to mind is a failed power supply. Apparently you don't even see the BIOS signature on the monitor, so you cannot even boot into the BIOS.

Hopefully you will post back in this thread with more information, but from what you have said, I would recommend that you have the power supply unit tested, and if it has failed, replace it.

A few things to try

by jruby In reply to Shut down!

Any entries in the event log that indicate something tried to stop but couldn't?

Step one is to check with the PC vendor's web site to make sure all your hardware drivers are up to date. Do this also for any add-on hardware in the system that's not covered by the vendor.

Step two - use MSConfig's startup tab to prevent all programs from autostarting when windows starts. If you can successfully shutdown without these processes, re-enable them one at a time and try shutting down again, repeat until the problem re-occurs.

If that doesn't cure the problem, try a similar test but disable any 3rd party services: antivirus, firewall, bluetooth, etc.

/* If you think the problem is bad now, wait until I fix it! */

Press and hold the power button to shut down the computer. It won't go down nice and clean, and may even trash the OS, but when you are this stuck, not much helps. Hope you had backups if something does go south...

Once you get the machine booted back up, make sure that you run all windows updates, BIOS updates, etc. Then make sure that you have antivirus software installed and updated, Spybot S&amp installed and updated. Boot into safe mode and run the scans from there. Bet you will find something there...
