Shut Down

Computers shutdown to windows 98 shutdown screen and there they just hang. This seems to be a bigger problem when connected to windows 2000 Server domain. We have tried many of the popular answers

Make sure that you have the mapped drives supplement installed on the W98 machines.

I agree with the Chas. I had been tinkering with a Win98 machine for some time trying all of the tips I could find to no avail. The machine was not on a network so I didn't try the MS patch for network drives. Finally I figured it wouldn't hurt so Iapplied the mapped drives fix and presto, the problem was gone.

Hello there,

That's is a very common problem on Windows 98, that also appears to happen on Windows 98 SE. Anyway, If I were you I will try to install the patch.
This was published for someone else some time ago, I hope it helps ...

Microsoft has discovered a problem with Windows 98's shutdown and is providing a fix. Problem behaviors included having Windows restart when a shutdown was requested and incomplete shutdowns. The Knowledge Base Article Q238096 details problem resolution scenarios that should be attempted before you determine that you need the fix. The download is 505Kb.
Go to Microsoft.com and search for Q238096
