Shut down closes OS, but power light sta

By ajbinder1 ·
After selecting Shut Down from the Start menu (Win 98se), the OS shuts down, but the power light remains active. Have to turn off the PC and turn it back on, and when I do, I get notification that the last shutdown was improper, and the machine then subjects me to the HD scan.

Any idea as to why the machine can't execute a soft-shutdown?

First off, restart the computer and go into BIOS setup and check your power management settings.

I'm going to agree with the first post.
Check your bios and disable the power management settings.
Start the computer again.
Disable all Tsr's before shutting down. Remove/disable the .wav file during shut down (could be corrupted).
Disable Antivirus software from checking drives during shut down.
Make certain you have the Windows 98 SE shut down patch.

Now try shutting down the computer. If the computer still hangs up.... Then you still have a problem to deal with. This could be outdated drivers, hard conflicts, or hard ware that has gone bad.

If it does correctly shut down, then you get to start putting TSR's back in, one at a time until it happens again.

The machine is too new to have most of the problems you describe.

Make sure that if you are running an anti-virus program that it is NOT set to scan drive A on shutdown or reboot.

Something else you might want to look into is if you have a NIC with a Wake on LAN cable connected to it. If the Wake on LAN feature is enabled, then the power light on the computer will remain on after you shut down the computer. If this is the case, remove the cable and/or disable the WOL feature in the BIOS. If all else fails, click on START -> RUN and type the following inthe command line:

c:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows

If the computer shuts down with no problems, then there is a hanging device driver or .dll that is causing your problems.

Thanks. Used the command to verify that there was something hanging that was not physical. Then I found out that WOL was enabled - I disabled it, and the problem went away!

the power supply in your computer may not have this feature. Disabling the power management may not be the correct answer, i would try both. At power supplies are known for this problem, atx power supplies are really the way to go but takes new mother board.

make the adjustment in the bios from power management also check the power settings in the control panel. Diable windows manageing power or not . there should be only 4 different combos to try. every computer acts a little different.

I tried the last post first, and it worked, but your post was a good follow-up anyway.
