Has anyone else had problems with computers running Win98 not shutting down properly? Some work fine others hang at the Shut down screen.
Any ideas????
Thanks,
Lori

Shut down problems

Yes, it seems to be a common problem. Here is a link to a MS support article

Shut Down Problem

1. Download the fix from MS
2. If that does not work than turn of fast shutdown. Type MSCONFIG in start run box.
3. If that still does not work you might check to see if you have a network card with the realtek chipset. I forgot wich specificchipset it is. Try taking the card out and see if that fixes it.
4. I do hope you were talking about W98SE.
This problems were not as comon using win98

What to do!

by penny_lee_candy In reply to Shut Down Problem

Before you tear your hair out, consider any changes you made to your system before the shutdown problems started.
Win98, after upgrading my mother board and adding a few new drives, I made the mistake of using my old C: drive. I should have installed a clean copy of Win98 on it but I didn't. Win98 found all the hardware and adjusted for the new mother board. But I now found that the shut down would hang. NO blue screen everything was black. All the drive lights were on.
How I fixed it. Reinstalled win98 on the c: drive after it was formatted. Problem fixed!
And remember a Virus can affect system files and sure enough a fresh install can cure this too.
